When to Call a Roofer Immediately
Because so much of your property depends heavily on your roof, it’s critically important to reach out to a professional roofer at the first sign of serious trouble. Failing to fix a minor issue could result in major repairs later on, and nothing is more frustrating than a serious and expensive problem that could have been fixed far more easily before.
As a general rule of thumb, if you can see visible damage on your roof, you should call a professional for a repair immediately. However, there are a few more subtle signs of roof issues that could indicate the need for major repairs. - Granules in your gutters. If you have an asphalt shingle roof, granules (the little sand-like texture that forms the top layer of every shingle) will eventually start to flake off. Heavy rains or high winds can further accelerate this process on older shingles.
- Cracked or missing shingles or tiles. If your roof has any spots where a shingle or tile may be missing, there’s a strong chance your roof may need to be repaired.
- Leaks or water-damaged materials. A leaking roof can quickly cause some serious damage to anything beneath it, including allowing mold and mildew to grow. Get any visible leaks fixed immediately! Pay particularly close attention to the area around skylights, as this flashing can wear quickly.
- Visible sunlight in your attic. If you can see sunlight peering through a gap or crack in your attic, even if it’s just a pinhole, you have a major problem that needs to be fixed. This pinhole will turn into a major leak the next time it rains, so have it repaired right away!
