Signs Your Attic Ventilation Isn’t Working

Indicators of poor attic or roof ventilation:

• Unusually hot upper floors: When the attic can’t expel trapped heat, the rooms below absorb it. If your second floor is noticeably warmer than the rest of the home in summer, the roof may not be venting properly.

How a Balanced Ventilation System Works

Effective attic ventilation relies on two types of openings working together: intake and exhaust. Fresh outside air enters through intake vents positioned near the eaves, usually at the soffit. That air flows up through the attic and exits through exhaust vents located near the roof peak.

Ridge vents run the full length of the roof peak and pair with soffit vents under the eaves to create continuous, uninterrupted airflow. This balanced intake-and-exhaust system helps keep the attic close to outdoor temperature in winter, reducing ice dam risk, and helps flush out heat and humidity in summer.
